Using my experience to help you

I take pride in supporting and driving change in the horse community by promoting the use of scientifically-proven, positive reinforcement training methods.

I love to teach and am passionate in helping you avoid the issues I experienced on my horse training journey. This includes avoiding the frustration of outdated methods (such as natural horsemanship, pressure and release) and learning to train using science-based techniques, without causing fear or trauma to you or your horse.

If you have been struggling or are simply seeking a compassionate and dynamic method of training your horse or their behavior, check out my list of services available to you.

50 years of professional horse training

As a professional trainer, I have trained numerous breeds of horses in various disciplines including volteige, trick riding, jumping, reining, driving, dressage and gaited horses.   This varied background has given me the knowledge to help others solve common problems and excel in their training journeys.   I stood two TWH stallions at stud and managed all breeding, training and showing for over 10 years.   My TWH mare, My Chocolate Lady, was “High Point - Three Gaited Horse” in Alberta, three years in a row, and retired the trophy.   I was fortunate to be the coach for team Quarter Horse and also team Tennessee Walking Horse at Spruce Meadow's "Battle of the Breeds.”

Living and learning with animals

In addition to professional training, I've immersed myself in learning from the esteemed Dr Susan Friedman, Ph.D. I have graduated in her professional course "How Behavior Works: Living and Learning with Animals (LLA)" as well as embraced her "Least Invasive Minimally Aversive (LIMA)" training style. I have used these learnings to design my training at Equispeak in order to achieve humane and effective behavior change.

The Click That Teaches

About thirty years ago, I realized I wanted to find a more positive way to train over traditional, corrective measures. I began following Alexandra Kurland’s clinics and “The Click That Teaches” mantra. She helped me discover the tools to train in high-school dressage in a unique and engaging way, that resonated with both me and the horses.   Alexandra’s clicker work, balance work and her knowledge of classical in-hand, showed me how using positive reinforcement can teach horses anything they are emotionally and physically capable of learning. I was also featured in her books and videos! I continued to immerse myself in this style of training and worked hard to further the approach and develop my own methodology that I use today in my Equispeak program.
